Laser for Active Acne vs. Acne Scars: When Forever Clear BBL and SkinPen Serve Different Goals

If you have been dealing with breakouts for a while, you may have started wondering whether a laser for active acne will also take care of your acne scars. It is a completely fair question, and the answer is usually no, at least not on its own. Forever Clear BBL® targets the bacteria and inflammation behind breakouts that are still happening, while SkinPen® microneedling stimulates collagen to soften the indented scars those breakouts can leave behind. If you have both, the order you treat them in matters.

I understand why the two get blurred together. Acne caused the scar, so it seems reasonable to expect an acne treatment to fix it. But active acne vs. acne scars are very different stages of the same story, and they respond to very different tools. If you have finished a round of acne treatment and your skin is calmer, but the texture you see in certain lighting is still there, that can feel frustrating. It usually makes more sense once you look at what each treatment is actually designed to do.

Is It a Breakout, a Mark, or a Scar?

When patients visit Lumia with acne concerns, one of the first things we look at is what they're actually seeing in their skin.

  • Are you still getting new breakouts?

  • Are you bothered by flat pink, red, or brown spots that linger after a breakout heals?

  • Or is it texture, the dips and pits that make your skin look uneven even on a clear day?

Those are three different concerns.

Flat marks are a change in color, and many of them fade gradually over time, even when it feels like they are taking forever. Scars are a change in texture. Dermatologists generally sort indented acne scars into three types: rolling scars, which look like soft, wave-like dips; boxcar scars, which have sharper edges; and icepick scars, which are narrow and deep. Many people have some combination of breakouts, marks, and scars at the same time, which is a big part of why acne treatment can feel so confusing.

How Does Forever Clear BBL Work as a Laser for Active Acne?

Forever Clear is Sciton’s acne treatment on its BBL (BroadBand Light) platform. I want to be transparent about the terminology: BBL is technically intense pulsed light, or IPL, even though most people search for it as a laser. That distinction doesn't change much for most patients, but I want you to know exactly what you are getting.

The Forever Clear acne treatment uses blue light to target acne-causing bacteria, yellow light to help calm inflammation and the redness that follows a breakout, and infrared light to support the skin’s healing response. At Lumia, sessions take about 30 minutes, we plan them as a series, and the treatment is available for patients 16 and older.

What Forever Clear is designed to do is work on acne while it is active. It can help with post-breakout redness along the way, but it doesn't rebuild collagen, so it won't fill in an indented scar. If texture bothers you most, you should know that before you start a series, so you aren't left wondering afterward why your scars look the same.

Deep, painful cystic acne is also a different conversation, and it usually needs prescription care before light treatment makes sense. For some inflammatory acne, the VariLite dual-wavelength laser is another option, and you can learn more about both on our Laser & IPL page.

Why Treat Breakouts Before Acne Scars?

I understand the urge to tackle everything at once, especially if you have been dealing with acne for years and just want it handled. The challenge is that every new inflamed breakout is another chance for a scar to form. Treating acne scars while breakouts are still active can feel like working against a moving target. Any progress made on scarring can be undercut by new breakouts.

There is a safety piece too. The FDA lists an active skin infection or rash, isotretinoin (Accutane) use within the past six months, and tanned skin among the situations where microneedling may not be suitable. That is why it usually makes sense to start with a laser for active acne and save scar treatment for once the skin has calmed down.

You may be wondering how long that takes. I do not have a set number of weeks for you, and I would be cautious about anyone who gives you one without looking at your skin. It depends on how your skin responds as breakouts begin to settle, which is why we evaluate your progress before recommending the next step.

How Does SkinPen Microneedling Help Acne Scars?

Once breakouts are under control, SkinPen® microneedling is where scar treatment can come in. It creates controlled micro-injuries that prompt your skin to make new collagen, and over a series of treatments, that collagen can gradually soften indented scars. SkinPen was the first microneedling device FDA-cleared to improve the appearance of facial acne scars, and that clearance applies to adults 22 and older. You can read more about the device, what treatment feels like, and how results build in our article on why SkinPen is the gold standard for acne scars.

Scar type matters here, and it is worth understanding before you start. Rolling scars are commonly treated with microneedling, while deep, narrow icepick scars often call for other techniques, sometimes alongside it. Your expectations should be built around your own scars, rather than a before-and-after photo of someone else’s skin.

Common Questions About Acne and Scar Treatment

Why can a teenager start Forever Clear but not SkinPen for scars?

If you are the parent of a teenager with acne, this one is worth knowing. Forever Clear at Lumia is available starting at age 16. SkinPen’s FDA clearance for acne scars covers adults 22 and older, so treating scars in younger patients falls outside that clearance. For many teens, breakouts are still active anyway, which means acne control comes first.

Does skin tone change the plan?

It can, and it is one of the most important questions to ask any provider who uses light or microneedling on your skin. The FDA notes that microneedling carries a risk of darkening or lightening in darker skin types, and that some microneedling devices were not studied in darker skin. Skin tone and recent sun exposure also matter with light-based treatments. At Lumia, our CRNA-led, safety-first approach means considering your skin tone, medical history, and individual risk factors before recommending laser or IPL treatments.
